The following message was posted on Britney's page, through the third-party website TwitPic: “Britney has passed today. It is a sad day for everyone. More news to come." When you go to her Twitter page now, it reads “The last message is obviously not true. She is fine and dandy spending a quiet day at home relaxing.”

Thanks to social networking sites, we can now follow every move of our favorite stars. One making the rounds on Twitter is pop singer Britney Spears, who was in London this month for eight shows at the O2 Arena. Though we're sure the performances were a hit, we're impressed even more by the hotel she and her entourage stayed at: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London. Her official tweet:

"I want to thank everyone at the Mandarin Oriental in London for the hospitality this month! You made my boys and I feel right at home."

Though we sometimes bash her music, we can't argue with her taste in lodging. In a city littered with fabulous hotels, Mandarin Oriental sits right at the top with exceptional design, amenities and, as Ms. Spears submits, unparalleled service.

The most notable was the rumor that actor Jeff Goldblum had suffered a fatal fall in New Zealand (Goldblum is alive and well). There were also rumors that Harrison Ford had died (he remains upright as well). Both were based on spurious news reports that were linked and Tweeted numerous times.

As Jacko found, fame means trusting only cats and chimps

There were many strange tragedies to Michael Jackson's life, but an unexpected sadness is that, in death, this huge global celebrity makes me think, not of Thriller, not even of the Jackson 5, but of a 47-year-old Scottish woman who was allegedly last seen in a hotel in Liverpool crying for her cat, Pebbles. Jackson's death and Susan Boyle's all too obvious unhappiness both stem from the same source: fame.

I have never believed, and nothing in the past few weeks has altered my certainty, that one can be famous in today's world of mass media and 24-hour paparazzi and lead a happy, mentally healthy life. How could it possibly be any different? You are isolated in a tunnel of paranoia where it feels like anyone with a camera phone is filming you for the celebrity website tmz.com, and they probably are. There are many examples one can cite: Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan. All are featured in celebrity magazines daily and, in this new warts-and-all world of tabloid journalism, their self-abuse is covered far more extensively than it was in the days of Elvis Presley. Never has fame looked less fun.
